Description

Official antique death certificate, extracted from the civil registry of the city of Marseille, dated 1941. This original administrative document is printed on cream-colored matte-textured paper, with a layout typical of official French forms from the early 20th century. The visible side features a "République Française" header surmounted by the official coat of arms, followed by the mention "Ville de Marseille – Extrait du registre des actes de décès" (City of Marseille – Extract from the register of death certificates).

The text is machine-typed, with many fields completed by hand or typewriter, notably names, addresses, and dates. There is a handwritten mention by the civil registrar, as well as the signature and the official round stamp of the Marseille city hall, clearly legible at the bottom right. A red fiscal stamp of 7.50 francs is affixed to the upper left part of the document, cancelled with a period stamp, a characteristic detail of French administrative acts from this period.

The document is folded in the center, creating a slight relief. The upper and lower edges show small signs of wear, typical of an old document handled and preserved for several decades. No decoration or ornamentation, the presentation remains sober and administrative, true to the models of the early 1940s. The printing is in black, with pre-filled text areas and others left for specific information about the deceased.

The main text notably indicates the death of an individual of Greek origin, which occurred in Marseille in June 1941, with mention of the declarant and witnesses. The presence of the fiscal stamp and the official seal reinforces the authenticity of this period document, representative of French administration under the Occupation during World War II.

The reverse side is not visible in the provided photo; only the front side and the central fold are observable. No other documents or accessories are included in the image. The ensemble is distinguished by its natural patina and the quality of paper preservation, with no major stains or apparent tears on the visible part.

Condition

Did you know? Fiscal stamps were used in France until the early 2000s to authenticate many official documents. Their presence on civil status records guaranteed the payment of administrative fees and provides a valuable clue for precisely dating a document.
