Bearer share Lyon Sugar Refinery 1920s old stock certificate decor
AFW - Antique France Worldwide
Description
This document is a bearer share issued by the "Société Anonyme Raffinerie de Sucre de Lyon". It is an old stock certificate, dating from the first half of the 20th century, probably the 1920s according to the typography, the appearance of the paper, and the visible printing conventions. The share has a face value of "Cinq Cents Francs" (Five Hundred Francs), as indicated in large letters in the center of the document.
The visible front side features a wide, pale green ornamental border with floral motifs, typical of shares and bonds of the period. The document's title "RAFFINERIE DE SUCRE DE LYON" is printed at the top in capital letters, followed by the company's share capital, the address of its head office in Lyon-Vaise (54, rue des Docks), and the type of share: "Action de Cinq Cents Francs au porteur" (Bearer Share of Five Hundred Francs). The share number (N° 02224) is clearly legible in the central part, accompanied by a handwritten signature and a partially visible embossed stamp.
The lower part of the document contains a series of detachable coupons, each bearing the inscription "RAFFINERIE DE SUCRE DE LYON - ACTION N° 02224", as well as coupon numbers ranging from 1 to 40. These coupons were intended to be detached when dividends were paid, a common practice for financial securities of that era. The entire document is printed on slightly yellowed paper, with shades of green, beige, and off-white, indicating its age.
The overall condition of the document shows some folds and undulations on the edges, with no major tears visible on this side. The period graphics and typographic style reinforce the authenticity of the certificate, which is distinguished by its retro aesthetic and decorative value, sought after for framing or wall decoration with an industrial, financial, or Lyonnaise theme.
The main inscriptions are perfectly legible on the photographed side: "Société Anonyme Raffinerie de Sucre de Lyon", "Action de Cinq Cents Francs au porteur", "Siège social : 54, rue des Docks, Commune de Saint-Rambert à Lyon-Vaise", and the various mentions on the coupons. No indication of the reverse side or invisible elements is provided here.
Condition
Used item, sold as is. Some signs of handling and slight creases visible on the exposed side, with no apparent major structural defects.
Did you know? Bearer shares such as those issued by the Raffinerie de Sucre de Lyon were common in the early 20th century. They allowed anyone who physically possessed the document to claim the associated rights (dividends, votes), hence the importance of the coupons. This method of issuance was gradually abandoned in France starting in the 1980s in favor of the dematerialization of securities.
