Description

Old illustrated poster, extracted from a vintage French magazine, hand-dated "24-28 février 1879" at the top of the sheet. The print features a humorous black and white engraving, typical of late 19th-century satirical press. The scene, titled "Les femmes à l’Académie" (Women at the Academy), shows several characters in period attire, seated side by side in an interior reminiscent of a solemn hall, probably an academy or a public institution, with an attentive audience in the background and classic decorative elements such as frames and chandeliers.

The composition highlights two women seated among men in formal wear, one of whom is holding a cane. The attitudes, expressions, and postures emphasize the ironic tone of the scene, reinforced by the caption at the bottom of the page: "All tastes being in nature, side-by-side might prevent some of these gentlemen from sleeping."

The graphic style, in pen, is characteristic of Third Republic press illustrations, with a firm line, strong hatching, and a lively staging. The signature "A. Cossard" (or similar, to be confirmed based on actual visibility) appears at the bottom left of the drawing, indicating an illustrator active in satire during this period.

The document bears the printed mention "ACTUALITÉS" (News) at the top and the page number "41", indicating its extraction from an illustrated news periodical or magazine. The paper shows a slight patina, straight edges, and a typical appearance of vintage engravings, with no added coloration.

The sheet is photographed resting on a wooden bench, with stained glass windows in the background, highlighting the heritage context and the natural light that enhances the paper's texture and the drawing's finesse. No verso or information on the back is visible in the photograph.

Condition

Used poster, sold as is. Shows vintage patina, some light creases, and very slightly dog-eared corners, with no visible tears on the front.

Did you know? Illustrated satirical magazines, such as "Le Charivari" or "L’Assiette au Beurre," played an essential role in French cultural life in the 19th century, commenting on political and social news through caricature and engraving. The humorous treatment of institutional themes, such as the Academy, was particularly popular then for its critical spirit and keen observation.
