Large altar candle holder in patinated coppery metal, formerly mounted as a lamp, with rich molded decoration of gadroons, fluting, cartouches and volutes. A decorative religious piece with a beautiful workshop character.

Description

Old religious candle holder of great presence, made of coppery metal with a nuanced golden-brown patina. The composition is organized around a tall fluted shaft, punctuated by ovoid knots with ribs and molded rings.

The upper part features a large circular bobèche with a gadrooned rim, centered with a conical spike designed to hold a candle. The tripod base features a relief decoration of cartouches, volutes, florets and foliage motifs, in an ornamental vocabulary of liturgical inspiration.

The whole retains a beautiful old material, with marked reliefs, a deep patina and golden nuances appearing on the edges and friction areas.

Context

Altar candle holders occupy an important place in old religious furniture. Their tall structure, wide bobèche and central spike were designed to hold church candles. From the 20th century onwards, many of these pieces were transformed into decorative lamps, thus retaining their architectural silhouette and sculptural presence.

The decoration of fluting, gadroons, volutes and cartouches is part of a historicist repertoire, nourished by classical and religious references, common in church objects and sanctuary elements.

Condition

Used antique item, sold as is. Patina of use, localized oxidation, rubbing, small marks and surface wear consistent with age and use. Casting irregularities and old traces are visible, particularly on the base and reliefs.

The lamp mounting is old and the item is offered primarily as a decorative element; any electrical re-commissioning must be checked by a professional.
