Old Paris Match 1939 cover soldiers Holland vintage period press
AFW - Antique France Worldwide
Description
An old copy of the weekly magazine "Match", featuring a vintage cover dating from November 16, 1939. The front page displays a black and white photograph showing several soldiers in uniform and helmets, observing the closing of an armored door on a bridge, a scene captioned "In Holland — The armored door of a bridge closes". The famous "MATCH" logo appears in the top left in a red cartridge with characteristic white typography, typical of the pre-war period.
This issue stands out for its sober layout and the marked contrast between the documentary photograph and the black banner at the bottom of the cover, which features the mention "L’HEBDOMADAIRE DE L’ACTUALITÉ MONDIALE" (THE WEEKLY OF WORLD NEWS). The printing uses nuanced gray tones, highlighting the tense atmosphere characteristic of the late 1930s.
The original price, "2 fr.", is printed at the bottom right, accompanied by the precise publication date: "16 NOVEMBRE 1939". A visible defect is present at the bottom right corner, where a part of the paper is missing, which does not, however, alter the readability of the main information.
The left edge suggests a classic stapled binding for this type of publication, with no superfluous details or apparent annotations. No other graphic or advertising elements are visible on this side, which highlights the visual impact of the cover scene.
This "Match" magazine embodies a direct testimony of the world news press on the eve of World War II, with a vintage and retro aesthetic sought after for decoration or archiving.
