Antique marine painting, dated 1889, oil on canvas, presented in a large gilded frame with relief decoration. A lively maritime composition of sailboats, bathed in a sunset light.

Description

This work depicts a seascape at low sun, with several sailing boats moving on blue-green water. The foreground is marked by a dark boat with a lateen sail, enlivened by small figures, while the background shows other sails standing out in a golden light.

The flexible and expressive brushwork renders reflections, clouds, and water movements through impasto and light glazes. The painting bears a red signature at the bottom left, of undetermined readability, as well as an 1889 date mentioned on the reverse.

The ensemble is mounted in an old gilded frame, made of wood and stucco, with rich molded decoration: leaf friezes, pearl rows, stylized foliage, and relief ornaments. The gilding has a warm patina, with browned nuances in the hollows of the decoration highlighting the depth of the molding.

Context

Dated 1889, this painting is part of the tradition of late 19th-century marine art, a period when port scenes, sailboats, and light effects on water played an important role in landscape painting. The composition emphasizes atmosphere, the movement of sails, and the light of the sunset, in a sought-after decorative spirit.

Used antique item, sold as is. The canvas shows an age patina, with crackling, surface marks, and visible signs of wear. The reverse shows old inscriptions, reinforcements, and repairs on the canvas, consistent with the material history of the work.

The frame retains a beautiful decorative presence despite gilding wear, small losses, scuffs, cracks, and old restorations visible in places. Hanging system present on the back.
