Description

This old brochure titled Le Saint Rosaire (The Holy Rosary) is a religious document from the period, published in April 1940 in Marseille. The visible side features a layout typical of French Catholic publications from the early 20th century, with a large-print title and a black and white illustration on the left, depicting a praying figure before a stylized stained-glass window, accompanied by an angel holding a rosary. The text, printed in black on paper with a yellowed appearance, details prayer intentions, plenary indulgences, and instructions for the Confraternity of the Rosary and the Perpetual Rosary.

The graphic composition is simple and liturgical, with linear illustration reminiscent of pre-war devotional engravings. Paragraphs are organized in columns, and several religious keywords are highlighted, such as "Indulgences plénières" (Plenary indulgences), "Confrérie" (Confraternity), "Intention" (Intention), and "Protection de Notre-Dame des Victoires" (Protection of Our Lady of Victories). The mention "Mensuel – No 577" (Monthly – No 577) and "49e Année" (49th Year) attest to the periodical nature and age of the journal.

The paper, with a matte appearance and slightly creased at the corners, shows a natural patina, typical of pre-war publications. The publication date, "Avril 1940" (April 1940), is clearly indicated at the bottom of the page, as is the city of publication "MARSEILLE". The precise numbering of the publication is also notable, a sign of a consistent and organized edition.

The visible text addresses the themes of the Annunciation, religious holidays in April, as well as prayer and meditation advice for members of the Rosary Confraternity. The black print contrasts sharply with the light, aged tint of the paper, which accentuates the retro and authentic character of this small Catholic journal.

This document stands out for its compact format and vertical presentation, ideal for display in a frame, on an antique lectern, or in a display case. The whole is representative of French religious publications from the first half of the 20th century, both in graphic style and content.

Condition

Used item, sold as is. The visible side shows signs of wear, folds, and some handling marks, with no apparent tears on the photographed part. Uniform period patina and authenticity guaranteed by the clearly legible print date.

Did you know? The Confraternity of the Rosary, founded in the 15th century, played a central role in spreading Marian devotion in Europe. Brochures and monthly bulletins, like this one published in Marseille in 1940, were distributed to reinforce the practice of the Rosary and support the faithful in prayer, particularly during troubled periods of contemporary history.
