AFW - Antique France Worldwide

Description

This item is an antique French pull-handle door lock, typical of the ironwork used from the 19th to the early 20th century. The visible side features a large, rectangular plate with a patinated finish, marked by uniform wear and some traces of oxidation, characteristic of old metal objects exposed to the elements. The mechanism shows a benedictine-shaped keyhole, recognizable by its specific outline, surrounded by a slightly protruding circular escutcheon, also marked by time.

To the left, a solid, rounded pull knob is visible, fixed on a thick spindle, allowing for both manual opening and manipulation of the bolt. To the right, two protruding rectangular bolts are visible, designed to engage with the door strike plate. The lock also features several fixing holes, visible in the corners, allowing for direct mounting on the door.

The surface presents a dark patina with grey-brown nuances and points of superficial corrosion, testifying to its age. No manufacturer’s marking is visible on the exposed side. The overall appearance evokes locks used in old buildings, in a sober and utilitarian style.

The robust design and apparent simplicity of the mechanism are reminiscent of artisanal or semi-industrial productions from the late 19th century. The general appearance, visible elements, and key shape suggest use for an entrance door, outbuilding, or rural building.

Condition

Used item sold as is. Presence of traces of oxidation, scratches, wear, and uniform patina across the entire surface. No key provided, mechanism untested. The item is visually stable, with no major apparent deformation on the visible side.

Did you know? Benedictine-key locks were common in France until the early 20th century, particularly in farms, workshops, and bourgeois houses. This type of pull-handle lock was designed to offer both robustness and ease of repair, with mechanisms often accessible to local craftsmen.
