Vintage metal matchbox St. Gudula Church Brussels vintage brick case
AFW - Antique France Worldwide
Detailed visual description
This rare antique matchbox, rectangular with rounded corners, features a patinated metallic finish on the visible side. The object is adorned with a circular embossed decoration representing the facade of the Cathedral of Saints Michael and Gudula in Brussels. The inscription "ÉGLISE ST GUDULE" frames the upper part of the medallion, while the inscription "BRUXELLES" appears at the bottom, both perfectly legible. The architectural representation is finely detailed, showing the two emblematic towers of the Gothic edifice.
The box has a hinged lid on the left side, held by a visible metal hinge. A small side attachment, on the left, is fastened to a chain (not entirely visible in this photo), probably allowing the object to be suspended or attached to a key ring or pocket watch. The outer surface shows a marked patina, with areas of oxidation and tarnishing, characteristic of an old metal that has endured decades.
The edge of the box is adorned with a fine striated or notched pattern, visible on the lower part, typical of matchboxes from the late 19th or early 20th century. The edges are slightly rounded, ensuring a comfortable and secure grip. No manufacturer's marking or hallmark is visible on the photographed side.
The embossed decoration offers a three-dimensional effect, highlighting the represented monument. The object shows traces of use, including some scratches and rub marks, mainly on the most exposed areas of the metal. The patina gives the whole an authentic and retro look, enhancing its decorative appeal.
This type of case, often referred to as a "matchbox", "match holder", or "match safe", was formerly used to carry and protect matches, while displaying a tourist or commemorative motif. Here, the Brussels and St. Gudula Church theme makes it a testament to early 20th-century souvenir craftsmanship.
