Vintage Jokiwa Japan mechanical music box, metal mechanism on a wooden base
AFW - Antique France Worldwide
Description
This listing is for an antique mechanical music box, Jokiwa Japan brand, presented here without its original case, mounted directly on a raw wooden base. The object consists of a visible mechanism including a metal cylinder with pins, a musical comb with parallel reeds, a flywheel, and a domed metal cover bearing the inscription "JAPAN" in molded letters. All visible elements show a homogeneous patina, characteristic of an antique piece, with traces of oxidation and wear from use on the metallic parts.
The rectangular wooden base provides stable support for the entire mechanism. The partially gilded cylinder reveals the complexity of the musical system, while the plate and fastening screws are clearly visible on the top surface. The actuation system, at the right end, features a metal arm topped with a black knob. No superfluous decoration: the piece highlights the technical and utilitarian aspect of period music boxes.
The mechanism is typical of Japanese manufacturing from the mid-20th century, with a sober and functional industrial aesthetic. The presence of the name "JAPAN" indicates production for export, a period when Japan established itself as a major player in the manufacture of mechanical music boxes. The general appearance corresponds to a vintage music box, sought after for its authenticity and traditional sound qualities.
The dominant color is that of patinated metal, alternating between golden tones and grayish nuances, contrasting with the light wood of the base. The mechanism reveals all of its components: cylinder, comb, gears, and springs, allowing appreciation of the finesse of the musical mechanics. No additional decoration, logo, or illustration is visible apart from the inscription "JAPAN".
This type of mechanical, hand-wound music box is an emblematic object of retro and vintage decoration. It can be integrated into a restoration project, a collection of antique mechanisms, or used as is as an industrial decorative element.
