Antique Patent Bézard compass, in blackened metal casing, with yellow and black graduated dial under glass and hinged cover with viewing window. A navigation instrument with a strong technical design.

Description

This compass features a compact, rounded blackened metal casing, with a suspension ring at the top. The cover bears an engraved DIRECTION marking with linear decoration, as well as a longitudinal opening revealing the internal scale.

The circular dial, protected by glass, is graduated to 360 degrees and marked with contrasting yellow and black sectors. The cardinal directions appear in red, with the central inscription PATENT BÉZARD. The peripheral metal bezel retains a patina of use consistent with the age of the object.

The whole demonstrates a meticulous utilitarian design: protective cover, sighting device, precise peripheral graduation and direct course reading. The presence of the Patent Bézard marking places this piece in the tradition of portable orientation compasses of the 20th century.

Context

The Bézard compass is associated with the patent filed in the early 20th century by Johann Ritter von Bézard, an Austro-Hungarian officer, for a field compass intended for orientation and sighting. These instruments were notably produced in Europe, with civil and military variants bearing the inscriptions Patent Bézard, Brevet Bézard or Original-Bézard.

Condition

Used item, sold as is. Antique patina, signs of use, rubbing on the blackened casing, wear on the bezel and visible marks on the dial and glass. These elements contribute to the historical character of the instrument without altering its decorative and technical presence.
