Ancient African solid bronze bracelet, handmade ethnic jewelry, vintage engraved
AFW - Antique France Worldwide
Description
Massive African bracelet, presented on a midnight blue background in a wooden framed display box. The object has a very structured, open "C" shape, with three rounded and voluminous ends, typical of traditional West African prestige or dowry bracelets. The surface of the bracelet has a uniform brown patina, resulting from natural oxidation of the solid bronze, as indicated in the keywords.
The engraved decoration consists of regular geometric patterns, made with shallow incisions over the entire visible part. Parallel bands, crosshatching, and chevron patterns are particularly noticeable, finely distributed over the curvature and bumps of the bracelet. These engravings, characteristic of artisanal work, demonstrate traditional African craftsmanship and reinforce the unique character of the piece.
The object presents a beautiful visual homogeneity, with no attached elements or visible joints on the exposed side. Its imposing shape, combined with the matte finish of the bronze and its apparent density, evokes the status or exchange bracelets used in certain African cultures, where bronze was a symbol of wealth and power.
The bracelet is displayed in a box, which allows for a good appreciation of the quality of its patina and the fineness of its patterns. No chips or major defects are observable on the visible side, apart from some slight superficial traces of wear, compatible with ancient use and artisanal manufacturing.
The typology, engraving style, and material indicated in the keywords converge towards an ancient production, probably from the first half or mid-20th century, but without precise indication of ethnicity or regional origin on the visible side.

Did you know? Solid bronze bracelets were traditionally used in several African societies not only as jewelry but also as prestige currency for exchanges, dowries, or ceremonies. The lost-wax technique, often employed for their manufacture, allowed for complex shapes and unique engraved decorations for each piece.
