19th-century antique two-tone shell cameo, carved in relief with a female profile à l'antique on an orange-honey background. An oval piece with finely legible decoration, in the neoclassical spirit of 19th-century cameos.

Description

Unmounted oval cameo, worked in reserve in a material with contrasting layers: light ivory relief on a warm, translucent background, ranging from honey to orange. The subject depicts a female bust in profile, coiffed and draped, with pronounced treatment of the garment folds and facial volumes.

The composition uses the classic cameo vocabulary: medal profile, modeled in bas-relief, polished background, and silhouette detached by chromatic contrast. The reverse has a smooth surface with natural nuances of the material.

Context

19th-century cameos fit into the neoclassical and historicizing taste very present during this period. Female profiles à l'antique, draped busts, and compositions inspired by ancient glyptics were particularly appreciated for jewelry, medallions, and small ornamental objects.

Condition
