Description
This piece is an old satirical illustration depicting a gendarme or police officer in uniform, done in a style typical of the early 20th century. The character, drawn in black ink and enhanced with a blue wash, stands with arms crossed, sporting a mustache and kepi, in a posture that is both proud and ironic. The uniform is detailed, including a belt, bandolier, sword, and satchel, distinctive signs of the law enforcement of the era. The facial expression and the overall attitude of the character highlight the caricatural and satirical dimension of the scene.
The composition is distinguished by a dynamic layout: the sheet features a deliberately marked angular cut on the right, creating an effect of depth and originality. Several stylized pen strokes evoke movements or shouts around the character, reinforcing the humorous aspect. At the top of the drawing, the handwritten inscription "Pour cette Police là !.." (For that Police there!...) appears, accentuating the satirical charge.
In the lower right corner, a printed insert is glued directly onto the sheet. It bears the title "L’ANARCHIE POLICIÈRE" (POLICE ANARCHY) and offers an excerpt of period text, addressing the theme of police authority and anarchy. This addition gives the work a documentary and critical dimension, typical of satirical publications or illustrated press of the early 20th century.
The support is a cardboard sheet or thick paper (material not specified), in a light shade, slightly patinated by time. No information on a possible verso or other sides is visible in the photo. The overall condition shows some signs of use, consistent with the age of the object, but the illustration remains legible and expressive. The whole is presented on a wooden background, in natural light that highlights the texture of the paper.
This old caricature offers a visual and critical testimony to the perception of the police and authority in an era marked by many social and political debates. The technique used (ink drawing with color enhancement) and the text-image association recall the practices of illustrated newspapers or French satirical albums of the early 20th century.
