Description

This antique postcard depicts the belfry of Arras, photographed after the bombardments of October 5, 6, 7, and 8, 1914, during World War I. The black and white image highlights the heavily damaged Gothic structure of the belfry, with numerous gaping holes and visible traces of destruction on the facade and tower. The central clock, the ground-floor arches, and the building's characteristic architectural details are clearly distinguishable. Several human silhouettes and horse-drawn carriages are visible at the foot of the edifice, emphasizing the historical context of the photograph.

The upper part of the card bears the following inscriptions:
"GUERRE UNIVERSELLE ARRAS – Le Beffroi (Bombardements des 5, 6, 7 et 8 Octobre 1914) – E. Ruif"
and in English:
"UNIVERSAL WAR ARRAS – The Belfrey (Bombardments of October 5, 6, 7, 8th 1914)"

The card features a monochrome print on cardstock, typical of editions from the 1914-1918 period. The visual occupies almost the entire front face, without a decorative border, and the surface shows some signs of age: slight traces, an old patina, a small horizontal crease visible on the lower third, with no apparent tears on the presented side. The corners are slightly blunted, a common characteristic for a postcard over a century old.

The photographic style, typography, and subject matter (iconic Arras building damaged during the Great War) confirm the authenticity of a period edition, highly representative of the visual documentation produced in the early 20th century regarding the destruction of World War I.

The back is not visible in the photo, and no information is provided about the publisher or any correspondence.
