Visual Description

This old postcard shows a black and white view of the entrance to the Saint-Martin barracks in Montélimar, Drôme. On the visible side, one can clearly see the imposing wrought iron gate, flanked by two massive stone pillars, characteristic of early 20th-century military architecture. In front of this gate, several uniformed soldiers pose alongside a few civilians, including children, forming a slice of urban life frozen in time.

In the background, dense vegetation suggests a park or a shaded courtyard behind the gate. The buildings visible on the left and right have light stone facades, louvered shutters, and an awning above the door. The overall composition evokes the rigor and order typical of French military installations of this period.

The print is monochrome, with a slightly grainy texture typical of old paper prints. The inscription printed at the bottom of the card reads: "31 – Montélimar (Drôme) – Entrée des Casernes St-Martin," accompanied by the publisher's mention "Nouvelles Galeries – Montélimar" and an "E.F., Paris" marking.

The scene shows about a dozen characters, the majority of whom are wearing military uniforms. The details of the uniforms suggest a dating around the years 1900-1910, a period marked by the presence of garrisons in many French cities. A few children and adults in civilian clothes complete this period tableau, testifying to the link between the barracks and local life.

The card is kept under transparent protection, which limits the visibility of the paper's texture but ensures good preservation of the image and inscriptions. No major defects are visible on the displayed side, apart from some minimal signs of wear related to age.

Condition

Used item, sold as is. The visible side is in good overall condition with moderate wear consistent with the age of the postcard.
