Visual Description

This antique letter opener features a unique design, crafted from a munition casing and a curved blade, all in a golden brass finish. The upper part forms a tubular handle clearly resembling a casing, with its neck worked to serve as a fitting for the blade. The intentionally arched blade is finely engraved with a handwritten inscription visible in the photo, whose exact reading is difficult but attests to a craftsmanship typical of World War I trench art.

The surface of the letter opener has a matte golden patina, with brown and coppery nuances, as well as some traces of oxidation or wear, characteristic of antique objects made from recycled materials. The blade's edge shows three angular cuts, enhancing the decorative and military aspect of the piece. The ensemble evokes a utilitarian and commemorative style typical of the "poilus'" creations during the 1914-1918 conflict.

The hand-engraved motifs, though partially altered by time, lend this letter opener an authentic and historically rich dimension. The finish is not polished, revealing fine scratches and tool marks, typical of manual shaping in a war context.

The visible side shows no additional ornamentation apart from the main engraving. The reverse side, the inside of the handle, and any other inscriptions are not visible in the photo.

Condition

Used item, sold as is. Patina, signs of use, scratches, and traces of oxidation visible on the blade and handle. The engraved inscription remains legible, although partly faded.
