AFW - Antique France Worldwide
Description
Antique porcelain thimble, presented here in an elegant wooden box with a felt interior. This thimble features a classic cylindrical shape, with a rounded top perforated with multiple regular indentations, typical of traditional sewing thimbles. The visible side is adorned with a colorful decoration depicting the Notre-Dame de la Garde basilica, an emblematic monument of Marseille, against a blue sky background. The inscription "N.D. DE LA GARDE" appears in black letters at the bottom of the decoration, highlighting its function as a regional souvenir.
The porcelain boasts a glossy finish that enhances the sharpness of the printed pattern, while the base of the thimble is encircled by a discreet golden rim, adding an extra touch of refinement. The object is displayed in a wooden hinged-lid box, whose honey hue and visible grain give the whole a warm and authentic look.
This collectible thimble is for enthusiasts of antique haberdashery and souvenir items. It stands out for the care taken in reproducing the monument and for the quality of the porcelain used, whose smooth surface and whiteness are characteristic of 20th-century commemorative productions.
The top of the thimble, visible in the photo, has an indented surface allowing for a good grip during needlework. No chips, cracks, or flaws are visible on the photographed side; the gilding of the rim appears intact and the decoration remains clearly legible. The wooden box, with its artisanal appearance, completes the presentation and effectively protects the object.
Condition
Used item, sold as is. The set appears to be in very good visual condition on the presented side, with no apparent defects on the decoration or the porcelain. The original box shows a beautiful natural patina.
Did you know? The Notre-Dame de la Garde basilica has dominated Marseille since 1864 and is the subject of many regional souvenirs, including porcelain thimbles. These objects were frequently brought back as travel souvenirs from the early 20th century, thus popularizing the custom of the "collector's thimble."
