Ancient mammal tooth taxidermy, vintage curiosities cabinet, distressed look
AFW - Antique France Worldwide
Description
The item shown in the photo is a mammal tooth, presented in a lateral view against a light background. The tooth is characterized by an elongated, bifid shape, with two distinct main roots and a partially eroded upper surface, revealing different shades of beige, ivory, and patinated yellow. The apparent texture is slightly rough, with smooth areas on the lateral faces and visible asperities on the upper part. The whole piece shows a natural patina indicating its age, typical of old specimens used in taxidermy or in cabinets of curiosities.
The dental fragment shows visible wear, particularly on the edges and the crown, revealing color differences between the external surface and the inside of the tooth. Yellowish and brown traces are observable in several areas, suggesting prolonged exposure to air or elements, with no apparent varnish or treatment. No markings, inscriptions, or indications of provenance are visible on the photographed side.
The tooth is photographed vertically next to a tape measure, which highlights its shape and anatomical details. The root structure and general morphology are compatible with a large mammal, though it is not possible to precisely identify the species from the image alone.
The piece clearly evokes use as a natural curiosity, ideal for enriching a natural history cabinet display or a collection of antique taxidermy-related items. Its authentic, unrestored appearance reinforces the vintage and decorative character of the object.
The tooth shows traces of oxidation and old handling, giving it a patinated visual appearance that will appeal to lovers of authenticity for enhancing a cabinet of curiosities-inspired decor or for educational use.
