Description

This work is an old religious illustration, created on a flat support such as paper or thick cardboard, visible under glass and framed with a thin molded frame, with a gilded border. The scene features two distinct framed sections, each adorned with an illustrated illuminated initial, with gilding and colored highlights. The initials feature stylized antique portraits, evoking medieval Christian iconography, and are surrounded by delicate plant motifs. The calligraphic text, in Gothic style, quotes Pasteur: "We do not ask an unfortunate person: from what country or what religion are you? We say to him: you suffer, that is enough: you belong to me and I will relieve you."

The dominant colors are sepia, beige and ivory tones, with touches of red, blue and gold on the initials and borders. The border of the text is highlighted by a fine polychrome floral motif, typical of ancient illumination. The surface shows a slight patina, signs of age and small traces, reinforcing the authentic and ancient character of the whole. The calligraphy, of great finesse, highlights the care taken in its creation.

The piece is presented in a glass frame, with thin, dark edges and a golden fillet, which enhances the illustration without overpowering it. The framing protects the work and emphasizes its decorative aspect, ready to be displayed. No details are visible on the back or reverse, as per the provided photo.

The composition recalls works created for edification or individual piety, typical of religious illustrations from the late 19th or early 20th century, although the era cannot be affirmed with certainty without other clues. The whole evokes the tradition of Western illumination, with a manual execution visible in the irregularities of the line and the subtlety of the gilded highlights.

Two stylized portraits are integrated into the "O" initials of the text, one in the upper part, the other in the lower part, each surrounded by a golden circle and painted details. These unnamed portraits recall figures of saints or clerics, reinforcing the spiritual dimension of the work. The text, of great humanity, emphasizes the universality of compassion, a central theme of the Christian religious message.
