Description

This handwritten administrative document is an official civil status record, dated 1912, issued by the municipality of Bouzigues. Presented on a sheet folded in half, it is an extract or copy of a deed, written in black ink on letterhead paper, with several visible official stamps. The handwriting is neat, typical of the early 20th century, with marginal notes and signatures at the bottom of the page.

In the upper left part, the blue stamp of the "Département de l'Hérault – Bureau spécial" (Hérault Department – Special Office) is clearly visible, as well as a second round stamp in the upper right, marked "République Française – Etat Civil" (French Republic – Civil Status). The reference number CT 89846 is applied in blue ink in the upper right. The handwritten mention "Commune de Bouzigues" (Municipality of Bouzigues) appears at the top of the page, followed by the title "Extrait des Registres de l'Etat Civil de la Commune de Bouzigues" (Extract from the Civil Status Registers of the Municipality of Bouzigues).

The central part of the document presents a detailed handwritten text, relating a declaration or a civil status event (birth, marriage, or death), with names, dates, and circumstances. Several handwritten signatures appear at the bottom, including that of the mayor or a civil status officer. The left margin contains additional annotations, dated 1912 and 1919.

The paper shows a slight patina due to age, with traces of wear, folds, and slight discoloration in the central area, typical of old administrative documents kept in archives. No major missing parts or tears are visible on the presented side. The whole gives an authentic appearance, with all the visual attributes of a vintage official civil status document.

This type of handwritten register offers valuable insight into local administration and genealogy in the early 20th century. The stamps, calligraphy, and period annotations attest to the administrative procedure in force in 1912 in the Hérault department.

Did you know? Handwritten civil status records were drafted and signed in duplicate by municipal officers until printed forms became widespread in the 20th century. Each municipality had to keep its registers and send a copy to the court registry, which now allows for local genealogical research.
