This illustrated envelope is a First Day Cover (FDC) dedicated to the Normandie-Niemen Squadron, a famous French air unit from World War II. Did you know? The Normandie-Niemen Squadron was a French fighter unit engaged in the USSR from 1943 to 1945. It is the only French military unit to have fought on the Eastern Front and to have been awarded the honorary name "Niemen" by Stalin, in reference to the river where it distinguished itself. After the war, its pilots and aircraft were repatriated to France with all honors.
