Description

This illustrated envelope is a First Day Cover (FDC) dedicated to the Normandie-Niemen Squadron, a famous French air unit from World War II. The envelope is protected in a transparent plastic sleeve, ensuring the preservation of its original condition. On the visible side, there is a large color illustration depicting two airplanes in flight, one of which bears the French tricolor roundel and the inscription "Z 18". The dynamic graphics and the presence of the red star recall the history of the squadron, which fought on the Eastern Front alongside Soviet aviation.

The main visual is framed by a golden, scalloped border with several inscriptions: "ESCADRILLE NORMANDIE-NIEMEN", "PREMIER JOUR D’ÉMISSION / FIRST DAY COVER", as well as "MODÈLE DÉPOSÉ EXCLUSIVITÉ O.P.A." and "AXE NORMANDIE SUR LA VOLGA". A "Chesnot" signature is visible in the lower-left corner of the visual, likely that of the illustrator. The overall presentation gives the envelope a commemorative and historical appearance, typical of French philatelic issues honoring emblematic events or figures.

A First Day postal cancellation is clearly visible on the envelope, bearing the date 18.06.1989 from Paris, with a central design evoking the squadron's emblem. To the right, a stamp is affixed, partially visible under the plastic film, completing the philatelic ensemble. The envelope also features a handwritten or printed "12F" label affixed under the cancellation, likely an old price indication.

The visible side shows no major folds or apparent tears. The colors of the illustration remain vibrant, the text perfectly legible, and the plastic sleeve ensures good preservation of the surface. No details of the back or interior are visible in the photo.

Condition

Used item, sold as seen in the photo. The envelope and its illustration are in good apparent condition, protected in a plastic sleeve. Minor traces possibly related to storage or handling.

Did you know? The Normandie-Niemen Squadron was a French fighter unit engaged in the USSR from 1943 to 1945. It is the only French military unit to have fought on the Eastern Front and to have been awarded the honorary name "Niemen" by Stalin, in reference to the river where it distinguished itself. After the war, its pilots and aircraft were repatriated to France with all honors.
