Description

This First Day Cover (FDC) highlights the 42nd National Congress of the Federation of French Philatelic Societies, celebrated in Châlons-sur-Marne in May 1989. On the visible side, a large color visual framed by a golden border depicts an emblematic building of Châlons-sur-Marne, probably a local monument, with a tree-lined scene in the foreground. The official circular First Day postmark, dated May 24, 1989, is applied twice on the envelope, around a stylized illustration of the monument and the mentions "42e Congrès National" and "Châlons-sur-Marne".

The upper left part of the envelope displays the commemorative stamp's visual, integrated into the overall composition. The inscription "PREMIER JOUR D’ÉMISSION – FIRST DAY COVER" in blue is also visible, printed on the front, as well as the blue FDC logo at the top right. The whole is presented on smooth white paper, with a transparent window at the bottom right on which a small handwritten coupon "10F" is affixed.

The dominant colors are white and blue (for the inscriptions and postmarks), as well as natural shades for the stamp illustration. The observed general condition shows some reflections and signs of use, particularly a slight crease on the surface, but the print, postmarks, and inscriptions remain clear and perfectly legible on the visible area.

This type of philatelic envelope is highly sought after for the quality of its First Day postmark preservation and for the historical interest of commemorating a national philatelic congress. The item presented here perfectly illustrates the French tradition of FDCs, combining a special postmark, local illustration, and official marking.

Condition

Used item, sold as is. Visible signs of use (creases, reflections on the plastic surface), inscriptions and postmarks perfectly legible on the presented side.

Did you know? First Day Covers, or FDCs, are specially issued to mark the official release of a new stamp. The First Day postmark guarantees that the stamp was canceled on the very day of its launch, which gives these envelopes a particular philatelic value. The 42nd National Congress of the Federation of French Philatelic Societies took place in Châlons-sur-Marne in 1989, marking a highlight of the French philatelic calendar.
