Description

This illustrated envelope is a "First Day Cover" (FDC) dedicated to the States General of the European Communities, dated March 5, 1960, in Cannes. On the visible side, it features a French stamp canceled with a circular postmark stating "PREMIER JOUR ÉTATS GÉNÉRAUX DES COMMUNAUTÉS D’EUROPE 5 MARS 60 - CANNES" (FIRST DAY STATES GENERAL OF THE EUROPEAN COMMUNITIES MARCH 5 60 - CANNES).

The color illustration depicts a stylized globe on which a blue flag adorned with a circle of white stars, evoking the European symbol, floats. The design is accompanied by graphic rays and an inscription printed in blue "IERS ÉTATS GÉNÉRAUX DES COMMUNAUTÉS D’EUROPE CANNES 1960" (1ST STATES GENERAL OF THE EUROPEAN COMMUNITIES CANNES 1960).

The stamp, in the upper right, features green and red architectural and graphic motifs, with the inscription "ÉTATS GÉNÉRAUX DES COMMUNAUTÉS D’EUROPE" (STATES GENERAL OF THE EUROPEAN COMMUNITIES) at the top and a visible face value. The whole is protected by a transparent plastic sleeve in the photo, which preserves the overall condition of the envelope.

In the upper left section, the words "JOUR D’ÉMISSION F.D.C. HISTORIQUE" (ISSUE DAY F.D.C. HISTORIC) are printed in red. The visible surface shows no major chips or apparent stains, but some reflections related to the plastic protection are visible.

The calligraphy of the postmark, the typical illustration of the 1960s, and the pan-European subject attest to the historical importance of this commemorative philatelic envelope.
