Description

An old French cheese label, round in shape, illustrated and typical of cheese packaging from the early to late 20th century. The visible side features a polychrome decoration with a stylized pastoral scene, depicting a rolling landscape of Pays d'Auge with houses, trees, and grazing animals. At the top center, a blue coat of arms topped with a crown is visible, accompanied by the inscription "Fabriqué en" (Made in) and two golden lions, characteristic visual elements of the Normandy region.

The main inscription, in white letters on a red background, reads "Vimoutiers – Enseigne de qualité" (Vimoutiers – Mark of quality). All around, a beige and brown checkerboard frieze frames the mentions "Petit Livarot" and "Pays d'Auge", reinforcing the regional origin of the product. The mention "Matière 40% grasse" (40% fat content) printed in black is also noted, typical of traditional soft cheeses. A blue stamp "Pays d'Auge" is visible in the lower part, adding an extra touch of authenticity to this label.

The manufacturer's name "G. Fontaine (Orne) Vimoutiers" appears at the bottom, confirming the geographical origin of the label and its use for a cheese produced in Normandy. The graphic composition, typography, and colors used (dominant red, blue, green, beige, and gold) correspond to the advertising aesthetics of French cheese labels of the 20th century. No reverse side or details on the back are visible in the photo.

The overall appearance is shiny, with clear printing and still vibrant colors, despite some signs of wear on the edges, testifying to the object's age. This label is a representative example of the graphic tradition linked to the marketing of French regional cheeses, particularly Livarot.

Condition

Used item, sold as is. The label shows slight traces of handling and superficial wear marks, visible mainly around the edges, without affecting the readability of the main inscriptions.

Did you know? Livarot is one of the oldest cheeses in Normandy, benefiting from an Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée (Controlled Designation of Origin) since 1975. Cheese labels, like this one, were used from the late 19th century to distinguish producers and promote the quality of the terroir. Vimoutiers, mentioned here, is a Norman commune renowned for its cheese-making tradition.
