Vintage cheese label Le Demi Livarot Grand Papa RIGAULT Normandie
AFW - Antique France Worldwide
Description
Old circular cheese label, of French origin, dedicated to the famous cheese Le Demi Livarot de Grand Papa, produced for the Rigaud cheese dairy in Champsecret (Normandy). The visible side features a vibrant red background adorned with a cream and gold border with a discreet geometric pattern. In the center, there is a male portrait in an oval medallion, typical of traditional Norman dairy industry visuals from the mid-20th century.
The text, in white and gold handwritten typography, prominently features "Le Demi Livarot de Grand Papa" followed by "vieilli traditionnel" (traditionally aged) and "garanti non pasteurisé" (guaranteed unpasteurized). Regulatory information is also clearly legible: "Fabriqué en Normandie" (Made in Normandy), "40% M.G." (40% fat content), "Poids 240 g." (Weight 240 g.), "14 AM". The mention "Fabriqué pour Rigaud" (Made for Rigaud) appears in gold capital letters, accompanied by the location: "Champsecret - 61 - France".
The perimeter of the label is decorated with a golden border alternating diamond and dotted patterns, giving it a neat and retro look. The visible surface shows excellent preservation, with no tears or apparent stains, and still vibrant colors. No reverse side is visible in the photo.
This type of label was traditionally used to adorn the round boxes of Livarot cheese, a Norman specialty renowned for its powerful taste and orange rind. The graphic aspect and print quality suggest production likely dating from the 1950s-1970s, consistent with the mention "non pasteurisé" and the aesthetics of the era.
The piece is displayed standing, leaning against old books, which highlights its authenticity and vintage charm. No major defects are observable on the exposed side.
Condition
Used item, sold as is. Visible side in very good overall condition, with no notable defects.
Did you know? Livarot is one of the oldest Norman cheeses, benefiting from an AOP (Protected Designation of Origin) since 1975. Its nickname "the colonel" comes from the five reed strips that traditionally surround its wheel, a characteristic aging technique of the region.
