Detailed description

Old round cheese label, from the French dairy sector and used for packaging Petit Livarot cheese. On the visible side, the graphic composition features a stylized tricolor rooster in the center, resting on five golden medals, evoking distinctions obtained (Paris 1902, Gold Paris 1898, Rennes 1896). The degraded background goes from yellow to bright red, giving the whole an aesthetic typical of French productions of the 20th century.

The main inscription in a blue arc indicates "PETIT LIVAROT FABRIQUÉ DANS LE PAYS D’AUGE" (Petit Livarot Made in Pays d'Auge), with the mention "LE COQ DE L’ORNE" (The Rooster of Orne) just above the rooster, and the precision "MARQUE DÉPOSÉE" (Registered Trademark). At the bottom, on a red background, appears "LAITERIE de VIMOUTIERS • Orne", which identifies the geographical origin and the producing dairy. On the right side, a white and red cartridge specifies "40 POUR CENT MATIÈRE GRASSE" (40 PERCENT FAT CONTENT), a classic indication for aged cheeses from this region.

The graphic design is completed by a blue box on the left mentioning "PAYS D’AUGE", as well as the signature of the label manufacturer: "CARNAUD – ANGOULEME" at the bottom of the label. The colors are bright and contrasting, with dominant yellows, reds, blues and blacks, and a clear print on a cardboard support (the exact aspect of the material is not specified but the appearance is reminiscent of old labels on thick cardboard or heavy paper).

The typography, medals, and rooster style suggest a mid-20th century production, true to the visual codes of the 1940s-1960s for French regional dairy products. The object presents good text readability and a decorative visual, appreciated for retro decoration or illustrating French cheese heritage.

In the photo, no major defects are apparent: the label appears to be in good general condition, without tears, marked creases, or visible scratches on the front face. The contours are sharp and the surface retains its original colors, although slight traces of use or exposure may remain (possible wear related to age, not visible here).

Condition

Used item, sold as is. Front in very good visual condition, with no notable defects visible in the photograph.

Did you know? Livarot, nicknamed "the colonel" for its five bands of rush, is one of the oldest Norman cheeses. Illustrated cheese labels like this one were widely used in the 20th century to distinguish local productions and promote regional dairies, becoming today true witnesses of French agri-food graphic heritage.
