Old military pennant, red/black satin, wooden rod, commando 4
AFW - Antique France Worldwide
Old military pennant made of red and black satin fabric, mounted on a wooden rod with ball ends, with a braided hanging cord. Central decoration with an eagle, sword and the number 4, in a graphic composition with character.
Description
This pennant features a beautiful decorative construction, typical of military tradition pieces intended for display or to represent a corps, section or unit. The satin-effect textile is worked in two contrasting fields: red and black.
The center features an emblem printed in black, silver and red: a spread eagle, a vertical sword, a shield bearing the number 4, and partially legible circular inscriptions, including "COMMANDO" and "ENTRAINEMENT" (TRAINING). The upper part also retains an old inscription, now faded by use and time.
Suspension is provided by a cylindrical wooden rod, finished with two spherical ends, and a braided brown cord for wall hanging.
Context
Military pennants are objects of tradition and identification, often associated with a company, a promotion, a course or a training unit. This one falls within this memorial use, with a clear martial iconography: eagle, sword, numbered shield and vocabulary related to commandos and training.
Condition
Used antique item, sold as is. The pennant shows a marked textile patina, with traces of use, areas of discoloration, old dirt and wear on the prints, particularly on the upper inscriptions. These marks contribute to the period character of the piece and its interpretation as a field military or traditional object.
