Description

This illustrated sheet from the CEF "Famous Men" series honors François Arago, a prominent figure in French science. The main part of the sheet features a drawn portrait of François Arago, surrounded by yellow stars on a blue background, a creation signed by René Quillivic. The inscription "LES HOMMES CÉLÈBRES" (FAMOUS MEN) and the name "François ARAGO" appear in black letters below the portrait, accompanied by the mention of the illustrator and his title "Grand Prix de Rome de gravure et créateur du timbre émis" (Grand Prix de Rome for engraving and creator of the issued stamp).

To the right, a column of text recounts the biography of François Arago, from his birth in Estagel in 1786 to his major contributions to astronomy, physics, and politics. The text is printed in black on a white background, with a neat and airy layout, typical of quality philatelic sheets.

The sheet also includes a commemorative stamp featuring François Arago, with a portrait similar to the main illustration. The stamp, predominantly blue, bears the inscription "1806" and "PREMIER JOUR 22 FEV 1986 ESTAGEL" (FIRST DAY FEB 22 1986 ESTAGEL), attested by the post office's first day cancellation. The round cancellation mark is clearly visible, adding philatelic value to the set.

In the upper left of the sheet, you can find the reference "N° 820 du catalogue CEF" (N° 820 of the CEF catalog) as well as the CEF logo, confirming the origin and category of this first day cover. The serial number "3864" appears at the bottom left of the cardboard backing, indicating a limited or numbered edition.

The entire piece is presented on a light wood-look cardboard backing, highlighting the finesse of the illustration and the clarity of the text. The sheet has a clean finish, with no apparent defects on the visible side. No folds, stains, or discoloration are visible on the illustrated surface or the stamp.

Condition

Used item, sold as is. The sheet has a clean surface, with no visible defects on the exposed side. The stamp, cancellation mark, and printing are clear and well preserved.
