Description

This official philatelic sheet published by CEF pays tribute to Georges Bernanos, a major figure in French literature. On the visible side, the sheet features a sepia portrait of Georges Bernanos, positioned to the left of the document. To the right, a biographical text details the significant moments of his life and work, including the publication of "Dialogues des Carmélites", "Journal d’un curé de campagne", and "Histoire de Mouchette".

The lower part of the sheet includes a stamp issued by France in 1979, also illustrating Bernanos' face, accompanied by a First Day cancellation dated April 28, 1979, in Paris. The cancellation bears the inscription "Georges Bernanos 1888-1948" and reiterates the portrait of the famous writer.

The whole is presented on a white cardboard backing, adorned with a gilded line framing the central part. The mention "Les Éditions CEF – Les Grands Hommes du Passé et du Présent" is legible on the left, as well as the reference to the "Catalogue CEF" (No. 442 S) and the indication of the limited edition of 33,800 copies, of which 13,500 are on silk. The individual number of the sheet, here 3442, is visible at the bottom left.

The sheet has three perforations on the left side margin, allowing for easy filing in a philatelic binder. The printing quality, the sharpness of the portrait, and the precision of the cancellation attest to the careful manufacturing of CEF editions. No major flaws are visible on the presented side.

Condition

Used item in good overall condition, sold as is. The sheet has a clean surface, with no visible signs of alteration on the shown side.

Did you know? Georges Bernanos (1888-1948) was a French writer and essayist, whose works deeply marked 20th-century literature. His novel "Journal d’un curé de campagne" received the Grand Prix du roman de l’Académie française in 1936 and has been adapted for cinema several times.
