AFW - Antique France Worldwide
Description
This CEF philatelic sheet honors Guillaume Postel (1510-1581), a major figure of the French Renaissance, renowned orientalist, and humanist. On the visible side, there is a richly illustrated composition, blending a red quill engraved portrait of Postel, Gothic architectural elements in the background, and symbolic motifs related to his work. An official postage stamp, bearing his likeness, is integrated into the upper right corner, accompanied by a specific first-day postmark "St Guillaume Postel – Barenton," as well as a reproduction of his handwritten signature in light blue.
The printed text presents a detailed biography of Guillaume Postel, mentioning his career as an ambassador, scholar, and professor at the Collège Royal, as well as his contributions to the history of languages and religions. The inscriptions are clear and legible. The sheet is adorned with a delicate golden frame, adding a touch of elegance to the whole.
The graphic work, signed by Marie Noëlle Goffin (engraver artist and stamp creator), combines fine lines and historical details: an armillary sphere, manuscripts, and cabalistic motifs can be distinguished, in reference to Postel's intellectual world. The text also specifies that this sheet is part of a limited edition, with the visible numbering "6928" in the bottom left.
The visible side of the sheet shows an overall clean condition: no major stains, tears, or creases visible on the illustrated area or the text. The colors, mainly black, blue, and red, are well contrasted. The left side margin displays the mention "N° 620 of the CEF catalog" as well as the edition information.
