CEF Château de Biron Dordogne illustrated stamp souvenir sheet
AFW - Antique France Worldwide
Description
This philatelic souvenir sheet issued by the CEF (Connaissance et Éducation Française) features the Château de Biron, located in the Dordogne region of France. The visible side shows a carefully crafted illustration of the castle, with its various wings, towers, and roofs, in shades of brown, ochre, and grey that convey the complex architecture and rich history of the site. The drawing, signed by Claude Durrens, faithfully reproduces the volumes and silhouette of the monument, emblematic of the Périgord heritage.
The heading mentions "CHATEAU DE BIRON Dordogne" and an illustrated, franked, and cancelled postage stamp is integrated at the top right of the sheet. The stamp features a stylized view of the castle and bears the inscription "MONUMENTS HISTORIQUES CHATEAU DE BIRON" surrounding an architectural representation. A round postmark accompanies the stamp, confirming the first-day cancellation, characteristic of CEF philatelic sheets.
The souvenir sheet is protected in a transparent plastic sleeve, perforated on the left (perforations visible for binder filing), and bears the number 4311 at the bottom left. The printed text at the bottom of the sheet traces the history of the castle, its successive owners, and its role in local and national history, with references to the Gontaut-Biron family and major historical events.
The document presents a typical layout for CEF commemorative sheets, combining illustration, historical text, and franked postage stamp. The background is white, the frames are sober, and the typography is clear. On the left border of the sheet, the mention "N° 1084 au catalogue CEF" confirms the reference in the CEF series.
The visible surface shows no major defects, scratches, or apparent stains; the sleeve protects the whole and clearly displays all graphic and textual elements. No other accessories or reverse side are visible in this photo.
