Description

This official CEF philatelic souvenir sheet honors Eugène Fromentin (1820-1876), a writer and painter from La Rochelle. On its visible side, the sheet features a drawn portrait of Fromentin in a medallion on the left, accompanied by his name and dates of birth and death. A detailed biographical text, printed in black, traces his life, major works, and artistic influence, with a mention of his travels in North Africa and his novels.

The upper right part of the sheet displays an illustrated postmark, dated September 25, 1976, from La Rochelle, featuring a stamp with Eugène Fromentin's effigy and a reproduction of his portrait. The postmark bears the inscription "Premier Jour" (First Day) and also includes a commemorative cachet.

In the lower right part, a reproduction of Fromentin's landscape painting, depicting ruins and a bright sky, highlights his talent as an Orientalist painter. The entire sheet is printed on a matte-finish card stock, typical of CEF philatelic productions. The presentation is meticulous, with a balanced layout and sober colors (black, sepia, blue-gray, beige).

The left margin indicates "N° 380 du catalogue CEF" (No. 380 of the CEF catalog) as well as publication and print run control information. The individual number "8876" appears at the bottom left. The whole complies with French philatelic standards of the 1970s and comes in a classic rectangular format.

This sheet is intended for enthusiasts of thematic philately, postal history, or lovers of 19th-century French art and literature, combining text, illustration, and special postmark for an elegant presentation.
