Bean galette charm old king mage yellow blue glaze vintage nativity scene Provence
AFW - Antique France Worldwide
Description
This antique "fève" (charm) represents a wise king from a nativity scene, crafted in a style typical of Provençal santons (figurines). It has an elongated shape, with an upright posture and arms crossed over its chest, holding a symbolic object. The visible side features a glossy glaze, predominantly yellow, with touches of blue on the right side of the face, the right hand, and the base of the figurine. The face is stylized, without fine details, and painted in a dark color for the beard and mouth, which accentuates the naive and artisanal effect characteristic of traditional fèves.
The circular base of the fève is thick, with a slightly cracked white enamel and some visible signs of wear, testifying to its age. There are also small imperfections in the glaze, characteristic of handcrafted pieces or those from artisanal production. The wise king's cloak, in a rich yellow hue, has a glossy finish that catches the light well, while the simple modeling evokes the aesthetic of popular santons from the south of France.
The figurine has two small black dots on the visible side of the base, probably due to firing or enameling. No details are visible on the back, as only the front is shown. The absence of a legible signature or mark on the visible part confirms its artisanal nature or origin from a small factory, such as those found in Provençal workshops during the first half of the 20th century.
The color palette, dominated by yellow and light blue, reinforces the traditional and warm aspect of this wise king fève. The smooth and lustrous finish, combined with intentionally naive contours, is in line with the nativity santons used during Epiphany, and reflects the popular ceramic savoir-faire of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region.
Condition
Used item, sold as is. Visible signs of wear, chips and marks on the base, partially patinated enamel. Original imperfections related to artisanal manufacturing.
Did you know? Enameled ceramic nativity fèves are a Provençal tradition dating back to the 19th century, where each nativity character was meticulously handcrafted. The wise kings, central figures of Epiphany, are often recognizable by their colorful cloaks and the simplicity of their features, which give antique santons all their charm.
