Description

Old pharmacy bottle, as shown in the photo, with a cylindrical shape, rounded shoulders, and a short, beaded neck. This bottle features an original label on the front, with several inscriptions in French, in red, black, and green. The most legible inscription reads “TONYL,” likely the product name, on a label typical of pharmaceutical preparations from the early to mid-20th century. Other visible mentions include “Stimulant général…” (General stimulant…), “Neurasthénie” (Neurasthenia), as well as “A CUBSAC DEPOSE” and “Marseille,” confirming the product’s geographical origin.

The bottle is topped with a dark, period-appropriate cork stopper, showing a visible crack on top. The upper part of the neck is designed to accommodate this stopper, which fits perfectly into the opening. The glass, slightly frosted by time, suggests a former residual capacity, but the bottle now appears empty or with traces of dry contents at the bottom. The transparency of the glass allows the interior to be observed, while the original label remains generally legible, although patinated and slightly worn in some areas.

The overall presentation evokes the world of curiosity cabinets, with an authentic aesthetic and a patina consistent with ancient use. The object fits perfectly into a vintage, apothecary, or medical decor. The label’s style, typography, and layout are typical of French pharmaceutical products from the early 20th century, characterized by precise medicinal mentions and multi-colored printing on thin paper.

The base of the bottle is visible and rests flat on the surface, with no apparent chips on the exposed part. No additional decoration is observable on the visible side, apart from the printed inscriptions. The bottle stands out for its authentic appearance and simple shape, suitable for storing liquid preparations in a pharmacy.

This type of container was commonly used for tonics or fortifiers, and the mention “stimulant général” confirms its use in the medical or para-medical field of the time. The whole is well preserved for an object of this age, with the label remaining in place despite time.

Condition

Used item sold as is, with signs of wear, patina on the label, a marked crack on the cork stopper, and visible residue at the bottom of the bottle. See photos for more details on the actual condition.

Did you know? Old pharmacy bottles, like this one, were often made of thick glass to protect their contents from light and air. Labels were printed locally and mentioned the city of production, here Marseille, which was an important pharmaceutical center in the early 20th century.
