Description

This antique engraving depicts a detailed view of the city of Auxerre, in the Yonne department. It is taken from "La France Illustrée" by V.-A. Malte-Brun, as indicated by the inscription at the top of the sheet. The engraved scene shows Auxerre Cathedral of Saint-Étienne in the background, a bridge crossing the river, townhouses, and several figures in the foreground, some of whom are strolling along the banks or near small boats. The drawing is enhanced by extensive cross-hatching, typical of 19th-century paper engravings.

The title "AUXERRE" is clearly printed below the illustration, accompanied by the mention "92. — Yonne." on the left. At the top, the city's coat of arms is reproduced between the titles "LA FRANCE ILLUSTRÉE" and "PAR V.-A. MALTE-BRUN". A handwritten signature is visible at the bottom left of the image, likely that of the illustrator or engraver.

The engraving is done in black on white paper, slightly yellowed by time, which enhances its authentic charm. There are some folds and signs of wear, notably a vertical fold mark and slight stains, signs of an old piece carefully handled over the decades. The edges are clean, with no apparent tears in the visible area.

The graphic style, the choice of architectural subject, and the typography indicate a production from the second half of the 19th century, a period during which illustrated works on France enjoyed great editorial success. This engraving, with its retro appearance, is distinguished by the finesse of its details and the fidelity of the urban scene depicted.

The sheet is simply placed on a dark wooden furniture, which highlights the contrast between the antiquity of the document and the warmth of the support. No framing or mounting is visible in the photo.

Condition

Used item, sold as is. The engraving shows folds, some handling marks, and slight surface alterations visible in the photo. Traces of age and authentic patina giving character to the piece.
