Description

This antique engraving depicts an architectural view of the Saint-Gervais church, identifiable by the inscription legible beneath the image: "Église de Saint-Gervais". The artwork is distinguished by an etching or burin engraving style, typical of 19th-century illustrations, rendered in black and white on paper, without apparent coloration. The scene shows a bustling square in front of the church's facade, with several period-dressed figures strolling or standing, lending the whole a historical and lively atmosphere.

The architectural subject is treated with precision, highlighting the details of the stones, openings, and the central portal of the religious edifice. To the right of the composition, a few adjoining houses are also visible, reinforcing the urban aspect of the scene. The entire piece is framed by a light-textured cardboard mat, which protects and enhances the engraving while facilitating its future framing.

The engraving is printed on off-white paper, whose texture and clean cut are visible in the photo. No handwritten signature marking is apparent on the visible side, but the printed mention "E. Sagot" is noticeable at the bottom left, likely the name of the artist or publisher, consistent with the practice of antique engravings.

The mounting of the engraving in a mat presents a neat appearance, without visible deformation or traces of humidity. The corners and edges of the mat are clean, despite some very slight marks of use, compatible with the age of the object. The surface of the engraving shows no chips, major stains, or tears on the visible part.

The general style, with its fine lines and marked contrasts, corresponds to 19th-century architectural iconography, often used to illustrate historical works or collections of urban views. This type of antique engraving finds its place in classic wall decoration, or to enrich a retro-inspired library or office.

Condition

Used item sold as is, with very slight signs of use on the mat. The engraving itself appears in good condition on the visible side, with no major defects to report.
