Description

This antique engraving accurately depicts the famous Belém Tower in Lisbon, an iconic monument of Portuguese architecture. The scene highlights the building in its coastal environment, with detailed rendering of the stones, battlements, and turrets. The image style evokes paper engraving techniques typical of the late 19th or early 20th century, recognizable by the fineness of the lines and the use of black and white.

The engraving is mounted on a brown cardboard backing, which ensures good stability and a neat presentation. The paper shows a slight patina, indicating its age, but remains in good overall condition. The margins are clean and regular, with a legible inscription at the bottom: "Lisbonne. — La tour de Belém." and, on the left edge, the mention "EUROPE OCCIDENTALE" as well as a page number (531).

The contrasts are well defined, allowing appreciation of the architectural details of the tower and the shadow work on the cloudy sky in the background. The ensemble gives this print both a decorative and historical character, ideal for a retro ambiance or wall decoration evoking travel and European heritage.

The engraving is presented leaning against a bookshelf, highlighting its horizontal rectangular format. No major defects are visible on the exposed side, apart from possible signs of wear related to age, such as slight marks on the edges of the paper.

The lower cartouche and original inscriptions are perfectly legible, reinforcing the authenticity of this piece. The black and white image highlights the texture of the stones and the massive silhouette of the tower, typical of period engravings used in illustrated works or old atlases.
