Description

An old precision hygrometer, designed to measure air humidity, as used in the 20th century in domestic or professional environments. The item is in the form of a circular dial with a glass front (broken, see condition details), framed by a patinated gold-finished mount. The dial displays a graduation from 0 to 100, with three main zones: "DRY," "NORMAL," and "HUMIDITY," typical of analog instruments of the era.

The upper part of the dial features a large hanging loop, allowing the hygrometer to be wall-mounted. The dial also bears the inscription "HYDROMÈTRE DE PRÉCISION" (PRECISION HYGROMETER) at the bottom, as well as a small central logo that is difficult to identify, suggesting old French manufacturing, with no specific legible brand on the visible face.

The needles, positioned in the center, are of a simple and classic style, consistent with traditional scientific instruments. The item shows signs of use patina, accentuated by the presence of dust and some traces of oxidation on the metal mount. The protective glass is broken, with several visible cracks across the entire surface, which does not prevent reading the dial but requires careful handling.

The dial indications are in French, with clear terms: "SÉCHERESSE" (DRY) on the left, "NORMALE" (NORMAL) at the top, "HUMIDITÉ" (HUMIDITY) on the right, and a fine graduation for precise reading of relative humidity. The overall appearance evokes a vintage measuring device, both utilitarian and decorative, characteristic of scientific instruments from the first half to the end of the 20th century.

Condition

Used item, sold as is. The dial glass is broken with several marked cracks. Traces of oxidation, patina, and visible wear on the mount. The central needle appears to be in place. The overall item remains legible but requires restoration for optimal use or decorative display.

Did you know? Analog hygrometers like this one were commonly used before the widespread adoption of electronic models. They often operate using hair or natural fibers sensitive to humidity, a principle invented in the 18th century and refined over time for the accuracy of domestic and industrial measurements.
