Description

Byzantine-style religious icon depicting the Crucifixion, visible on a round relief plaque. The main face of the object shows a central scene with Christ on the cross, surrounded by figures in bas-relief, probably the Virgin Mary, Saint John, and two angels depicted above the cross. The whole is contained within a medallion with a finely carved braided border, typical of Russian Orthodox productions.

The material has a patinated, dark green metallic finish, consistent with the "metal" keyword. The icon is placed in a rigid display case or stand, itself green, with a metal button on the front. A perforation is visible at the top of the medallion, suggesting the possibility of wall hanging or suspension, a common use for this type of votive or decorative plaque.

The Crucifixion scene follows Orthodox iconographic canons: Christ, with outstretched arms, is flanked at his base by two figures in prayer or mourning, while the two angels overlook the composition, emphasizing the sacred dimension. The letters "IC" and another character (probably "XC," a traditional abbreviation for Jesus Christ in Greek) are visible on either side of the cross, a frequent signature on Russian icons.

The surface of the plaque shows a homogeneous patina, with slight signs of wear and some visible marks or stains, particularly around the edges and the lower part. No major chips or structural deformation appear on the visible face. The relief remains clear, allowing for good distinction of the details of the scene and figures.

The general style, round shape, and bas-relief technique evoke a production inspired by Russian Orthodox icons from the late 19th or early 20th century, although a precise dating cannot be confirmed from the image alone.

Did you know? Byzantine-style metal icons were often made in Russia from the 17th century onwards, especially for domestic worship. The reliefs were sometimes obtained by casting or stamping, then patinated to protect the surface and enhance the sacred aspect of the representation.
