Vintage ESM Saint-Cyr Gacalites Enamel Military Badge
AFW - Antique France Worldwide
Description
Old military badge, identified as a student or graduating class badge from the École Spéciale Militaire de Saint-Cyr, recognizable by its distinctive elements and the vertical inscription "GACALITES" on a light blue background. The piece has an elongated shield shape, outlined with a yellow border around the entire lower edge. The badge is adorned with a large stylized white wing motif, surmounted by a five-pointed green star, a red flame, and a golden saber positioned diagonally. In the lower left, a metallic cogwheel evokes the symbolism of industry or military technology.
The front surface of the badge is finely enameled in several colors: light blue, green, red, white, and yellow, each shade precisely applied in delimited compartments. The contours of the motifs and the shield are highlighted by a brilliant metallic finish, probably brass or gilt metal (material not specified in the keywords). The whole presents a visual aspect very typical of French military badges from the second half of the 20th century, with cloisonné enamel work.
The inscription "GACALITES" is clearly legible, probably indicating a graduating class or a specialization within the ESM Saint-Cyr. The iconography – star, saber, cogwheel – evokes military tradition, academic excellence, and technical expertise. No manufacturer's mark or year is visible on the presented face.
The back is not visible in the photo, so no information can be provided about the attachment system, markings, or back finish. Only the front face, exposed to natural light, is described here.
The piece shows a slight patina and some signs of wear on the metallic part of the saber and the wheel, without major alteration to the enamel. The whole retains its original luster and vivid colors.
Condition
Used item, sold as is. Presence of a slight patina and small traces of use on the metallic part, enamel in good overall condition.
Did you know? The École Spéciale Militaire de Saint-Cyr, founded in 1802 by Napoleon Bonaparte, is the main training school for officers of the French Army. Each graduating class traditionally chooses a distinctive name and has a specific commemorative badge made, often rich in military and technical symbols, which becomes a strong sign of recognition for its members.
