Description
Military seniority badge, representing the 68th African Regiment, typical of traditional French badges. This model features a diamond shape with a gold outline, adorned with three embossed elements on the sides, evoking stylized cannons. The visible face is divided into two fields: the upper part, in deep blue, displays a golden crescent and a silhouette of a fortification or relief, while the lower part, in vivid red, is marked with the number "68" in gold. The whole is treated in an enamelled style with a glossy finish, very characteristic of 20th-century French military badges.
The manufacturing reveals a beautiful quality of detail on the embossed gold pattern, particularly on the upper area representing a stylized scene. The contours are sharp, the enamelled decoration is well preserved, highlighting the contrasting blue and red colors. The badge has three golden protrusions on the sides and base, typical of certain regimental badges, reinforcing the military and historical aspect of the piece.
The inscription "68" is perfectly legible on the red field, confirming its attribution to this specific regiment. No other text or marking is visible on the front face. The entire piece is mounted on a backing that is not fully visible in the photo, but the presentation suggests a badge to be attached to a uniform or beret.
The surface has a glossy finish, with no major apparent defects on the visible face. The enamel shows no cracks or significant chips in this view. The gilding retains a beautiful luster, with slight traces of wear consistent with a vintage object.
This type of badge was generally worn by members of the regiment, as a testament to belonging and military identity. The aesthetics and manufacturing correspond to the French tradition of African army badges, recognizable by their specific colors and symbols.

Did you know? African regiments, created in the 19th century, were composed of troops stationed in the French colonies of the Maghreb. The badges of these regiments are renowned for their distinctive symbols, often inspired by geography, history, and local emblems. The crescent is a frequently used motif, in reference to North Africa.
