Description

This antique toy depicts a San Francisco Cable Car, typical of models produced in Japan in the 1950s. It is an elongated miniature vehicle, mounted on six visible wheels, with a finely illustrated body. The exterior structure features a metallic-looking finish, adorned with bright colors: dark green on the sides, a red band on the roof, ivory side panels, and details painted in black, white, and gold. The inscriptions "SAN FRANCISCO CABLE CAR" and "BAY & TAYLOR Sts.", as well as the number "512", are clearly visible on the side. The interior, visible through the open windows, simulates wood-look benches with a visible floor. The friction mechanism is integrated into the chassis, as suggested by the presence of thick wheels typical of this system.

The toy comes with its original box, decorated with a colorful illustration depicting the same tramway running in a San Francisco urban landscape, with the mention "SAN FRANCISCO CABLE CAR" in red letters. The packaging also bears the mention "MADE IN JAPAN", confirming the Japanese origin of the toy, a characteristic detail of post-war tinplate productions. The box faithfully reproduces the colors of the toy, with stylized characters visible through the windows on the illustration.

The visible side of the tramway presents neat details, with framed windows, a stylized side door, and decorative elements such as golden lines and small inscriptions ("MARKET STREET RY CO."). The wheels, clearly visible, are made of black plastic, contrasting with the body. The overall finish shows precise lithography, typical of Japanese tinplate toys of that era.

The toy, in its current presentation, evokes the world of vintage mechanical toys, with a design faithful to the emblematic San Francisco cable cars. The set offers a beautiful example of a decorative or collectible item, highlighting the retro aesthetics of the 50s and the craftsmanship of Japanese manufacturers specializing in lithographed tinplate.

The original box is included in the photo, with colorful graphics and clearly legible inscriptions. The patina, any traces of wear, or small paint chips are visible, highlighting the authenticity of a vintage toy.

Condition

Used item, sold as is. Presence of wear and slight marks on the body, consistent with the age of the toy. Original box included, with visible signs of handling. The set remains visually attractive for an antique toy from the 1950s.

Did you know? San Francisco's "cable cars" are among the few cable-hauled trams still in service worldwide. Tinplate toys produced in Japan in the 1950s are sought after for the quality of their lithography and their friction mechanism, which allowed the vehicle to move forward by pushing it backward and then releasing it.
