Description

This period newspaper is an original copy of the French regional daily Le Provençal, dated Thursday, April 8, 1954. The front page features a typical 1950s layout, with large black headlines and dense columns of text, illustrated with several black and white photographs. The newspaper's title is printed in red, clearly visible at the top of the page, highlighting its characteristic visual identity. The typography and article structure perfectly reflect the aesthetic of post-war print media.

The front page covers major news topics of the time, such as the Digne trial ("Paul Maillet accuses"), international politics ("France-USA Agreement"), and various news items (accidents in the Pan-American race, evacuation from Algeria). Several photographs illustrate the main articles: a close-up portrait, an official meeting scene, and a courtroom view. The texts are clearly legible, allowing this issue to be placed in its precise historical context.

The newspaper has a matte newsprint surface, with traces of handling and slight fold marks visible across the page. The edges are slightly creased, testifying to its age and authenticity. The monochrome printing (black and red for the title) is typical of French press of the era, with visible grain in the photographs.

The visible content also includes sports sections (football), political briefs, and local announcements. Noteworthy are the mentions "17e édition" (17th edition) and the displayed selling price "15 francs", valuable identification elements for enthusiasts of old newspapers.

The newspaper is photographed open to the front page, placed on a dark wooden surface, which highlights the contrast of its light paper and period prints. No content from the back or interior pages is visible in the image.

Condition

Used item, sold as is. Shows fold marks, some creasing, and a general patina due to age, with no major visible tears on the displayed side. The paper retains good readability and the printing remains contrasted.

Did you know? Le Provençal was one of the major daily newspapers in southeastern France, founded in 1944. It merged in 1997 with Le Méridional to create La Provence, which remains one of the most widely distributed regional newspapers in southern France today.
