Description

Old pair of binoculars signed Malacrida, optician in Toulon, visible in its original case. The item presented is a pair of theatre or opera binoculars, recognizable by their compact shape and wide eyepieces. The upper face shows two circular lenses inserted into a dark-looking frame, probably metallic or black lacquered, but without explicit mention of the material in the keywords.

The case visible in the photo is lined with blue satin fabric on the upper interior, adorned with a gilded marking: "MALACRIDA, OPTICIEN, 12 RUE D’ALGER, TOULON", accompanied by decorative gilded motifs. The edge of the case features a gilded piped finish, visible on the lid and base, which highlights the refined character of the piece. The metal closure button is also visible on the front.

The binoculars, inserted in their custom-made compartment, have a smooth and shiny surface, with no apparent decoration on the visible area. The upper surface of the lenses appears clean, but there are some signs of wear on the edges of the frame, typical of old use. The case also shows signs of age on the interior textile, including some marks and color variations.

The ensemble exudes a classic style, typical of optical accessories from the late 19th or early 20th century, often used for theatre or opera. The contrast between the black of the frame and the deep blue of the case, combined with the gilded motifs, gives the object an elegant and timeless appearance.

Condition

Used item, sold as is. Visible wear on the binocular frame and the interior textile of the case. Traces of use consistent with the age and function of the object. The interior inscription of the case remains perfectly legible.

Did you know? Theatre binoculars, also called lorgnettes, were essential accessories in performance halls from the 19th century onwards. Established opticians like Malacrida in Toulon often offered personalized models, sometimes marked with the store's address, which today facilitates their identification and dating.
