Description

This antique carriage lamp is distinguished by its rectangular, cut-corner shape, typical of carriage lanterns from the turn of the 20th century. The structure features a visually gilded and patinated finish, with traces of oxidation that attest to its age and authenticity. The front face is protected by a glass pane, behind which a classic wick burner mechanism for oil or petroleum lamps, likely original, is visible.

The openwork cap, surmounting the lantern, features geometric patterns cut into the metal, ensuring the necessary ventilation for combustion. This upper part also shows an antique patina, accentuating the retro and decorative aspect of the whole. The wide and stable circular base displays the same aged gold finish as the rest of the piece.

The sober and utilitarian lines of this lantern are in the style of horse carriage accessories, used for both signaling and lighting during night travels. The edges of the front frame reveal homogeneous wear, with no apparent cracks on the glass or major deformation of the metal body visible in the photo.

The contrast between the gilded surface and the blackened or matte areas, as well as the slightly tarnished glass, give this carriage lamp an authentic charm, perfect for a vintage or retro decoration. The interior mechanism, although partially visible, reveals the wick adjustment knob, typical of carriage lanterns from the late 19th or early 20th century.

This piece is ideal for enhancing an equestrian or rural themed interior, or for complementing a retro ambiance in a display case, office, or entryway. Its patinated finish and openwork details make it a curious object that is both decorative and steeped in history.

Condition

Used item, sold as is. Patina and traces of oxidation visible over the entire surface, consistent with age. The front glass is intact. Homogeneous wear on the gilded and blackened parts.

Did you know? Carriage lanterns were designed to withstand road bumps and bad weather. Their openwork cap allowed smoke to escape while protecting the flame from the wind, thus ensuring stable lighting during nighttime carriage rides.
