French Napoleon III era lamp, circa 1850, with two lights, combining a silver-plated metal frame with a painted tole screen decorated with a cherub, roses and a dark cartouche.

Description

Elegant two-light lamp, constructed around a central shaft and two curved side arms, each holding a scalloped bobeche. The frame features a relief decoration of volutes, molded reserves, a curved base and foliate elements, in the ornamental spirit of the Second Empire.

The painted tole screen, slightly curved in shape, is decorated on a gilded and nuanced brown background. It features a central cartouche with a cherub decoration in light grisaille on a dark background, accompanied by bouquets of roses painted on the sides. The painted surface shows a beautiful antique material, with cracked varnish, muted tones and deep patina.

The upper part is adorned with a central rod ending in a turned finial, with a lateral fixing element. The two light holders retain their candle-style tubes, in a decorative presentation true to old lamp mountings.

Context

This piece is part of French production from the mid-19th century, Napoleon III era. The taste of the Second Empire favored rich decorative compositions, curved forms, historicist ornaments and contrasting effects between metal, gilding, dark patinas and painted decorations. Painted tole, used for lampshades, screens and lighting accessories, allowed for refined decorations combining figurative scenes, floral motifs and backgrounds imitating lacquers or antique varnishes.

Condition

Used antique object, sold as is. Significant signs of age on the whole, with oxidation, rubbing, surface wear, small paint losses and cracks in the painted decoration. The tole shows traces of use, slight deformations and visible fixing points, consistent with the age and nature of the material.

The silver-plated metal frame shows wear to the silver plating, pitting, blackening and traces of oxidation, which contribute to the antique character of the object. The candle-style tubes also show missing parts and rubbing. For lighting use, the assembly should be checked or adapted by a professional.
