Description

Vintage handwritten letter, dated "Paris, January 8, 1935", written in black ink on a large-squared lined paper sheet. The document features an elegant cursive handwriting, characteristic of the interwar period, with a neat style and pronounced thick and thin strokes. The text, addressed to a child ("Mon cher grand" - My dear big one), evokes a familiar and benevolent tone, particularly in the phrasing and choice of words. The letter fills the entire visible page, without decorated margins.

The sheet, placed on a dark wooden desk, is distinguished by slightly curved corners, indicating old but careful use. No printed letterhead or illustration is visible; only the handwritten date at the top of the page provides a precise indication of the temporal context. The writing remains legible across the entire front, with no apparent erasures, and the paper retains an off-white appearance, typical of correspondence papers from the early 20th century.

In the background, the photograph reveals an antique bookcase, reinforcing the authenticity and historical ambiance of the scene. A decorative metal element (probably a paperweight or a gilded desk accessory) is visible on the right, without obscuring the letter's content.

The letter shows neither watermark nor visible seal on the photographed side. The entire text spans a single page, with no legible author mentioned on the exposed side, but the content evokes school difficulties and encouragement, typical of parent-child correspondence of this period. The document shows no chips or major stains on the visible side, and the lines of writing remain clear and continuous.

Condition

Used antique letter, sold as is. Some visible folds and corner bends, moderate wear compatible with a paper document from the 1930s. Writing fully legible on the exposed side, paper well-preserved.

Did you know? Family handwritten correspondence was a cornerstone of social connection in interwar France. Large-squared notebooks and letter paper, adopted since the late 19th century, facilitated the learning of cursive writing and structured the layout of personal texts.
