Old handwritten letter 1940 with WWII era envelope Marguerite Savoie
AFW - Antique France Worldwide
Description
Old handwritten letter accompanied by its original envelope, dated September 1940, visible at the top of the page ("Hauteluce September 23rd"). The set includes a sheet of paper with blue ink handwriting, addressed to "Chère Marguerite", as well as a stamped envelope with a red "RF" stamp and a partially legible postmark indicating "Savoie" and the date 1940. The envelope is addressed to "Henri Blanc" and features handwriting similar to that of the letter. The text of the letter is in French, in neat cursive script, typical of early 20th-century correspondence.
The letter is carefully written on a cream-colored sheet of paper, showing some slight handling marks, including a discrete brown stain on the left side. The ink is well preserved, without significant smudging, and the text remains perfectly legible throughout the visible part. The gray-blue envelope bears a stamp with the profile of Marianne, characteristic of French postage from the Second World War period. The postal marks are clearly dated, enhancing the historical interest of this lot.
The set is distinguished by its visual authenticity: the period handwriting, the wording of the text, and the presentation of the envelope correspond to the customs of the 1940s. The handwritten address, the calligraphy, and the writing style bear witness to private correspondence exchanged during the Second World War, in the context of the Savoy region.
The lot includes only what is visible in the photo: a handwritten sheet (front only) and a stamped envelope, placed on a wooden surface. No other documents or accessories are included. Decorative elements in the background are not part of the sale.
This set is ideal for anyone looking for an old letter, a period handwritten testimony, or a vintage postal document, with complementary keywords such as retro correspondence, antique letter, or WW2 handwritten mail.
Condition
Used item, sold as is. The letter and envelope show slight signs of wear and a small stain on the paper, consistent with the age and authenticity of the document. The writing remains legible, and the envelope retains its original stamp and postal marks.
Did you know? During the Second World War, postal correspondence remained an essential link between dispersed families. The red stamp with Marianne's profile, visible here, was issued from the late 1930s and used throughout the conflict period, particularly in occupied regions or those near the demarcation line.
