Description

Old handwritten letter dated December 12, 1948, and written in Marseille, visible on the upper left part of the document. This personal letter is written in blue ink on a white sheet of paper with a slightly ivory appearance, featuring a marked central horizontal crease, typical of letters folded for postal sending. The text is carefully handwritten, with fluid and regular cursive script.

The beginning of the letter, addressed to “Little sister,” evokes a warm post-war family exchange, reinforced by the explicit date of 1948, immediately after World War II. The author expresses joy at receiving news and describes a daily scene, mentioning the city of Marseille and the rainy atmosphere, which adds a lively and authentic dimension to this historical testimony.

The sheet visible in the photo is placed on a dark wooden surface, next to an alignment of old books with gilded bindings, with no indication of the back or other pages. The blue ink is well preserved, with no apparent smudges, and the paper does not show major stains or tears on the visible side. The margins are regular, with no printed header, confirming a strictly private and family use.

Several lines are legible, notably: “Marseille, 12 décembre 48”, “Petite sœur,” (Little sister,) “Combien j’ai été heureux de recevoir ta lettre !” (How happy I was to receive your letter!), “J’ai bien tardé à y répondre à cause de mes journées bien chargées !” (I was very late in replying due to my busy days!), which attests to the authentic nature of the correspondence and its emotional context.

The letter offers a direct testimony of daily life in the late 1940s in France, through the prism of a sibling relationship. This type of document is particularly sought after for its historical qualities, its period calligraphy, and the sincerity of the transcribed exchanges.
